Tasks 5–6

This page lists tasks 5–6 and will take you 25 lessons/5 weeks to complete.
–note; time allowances are based on the best estimate of how students will progress through the course but can be subject to change depending on students' learning needs

Task 5 – 10 sketchbook pagses & dozens of digital files
This task has four steps
5A. Concepts, 5B. Developments, 5C. Refinements, 5D. Testing

Before you begin, refresh your memory as to what type of Design you're working with? to make sure your focus is going to serve you well.

    5A – Brief Concepts ––- Time Allowance: 4 lessons

Refer to your Focus task, when you listed All the possible briefs for your Design Campaign.
    • You're going to design a POSTER (or the most logical next project for your campaign) and you're going to begin by Generating Design Concepts for the poster just as you did for your logos
    • You are about to develop another member of the family – Remember:
      • These Concepts have unique characteristics BUT their visual relationship to the logos, colour palette, feel, style... of the family should be clear.
      • You are again at the first stage of the process that should now be familiar – Generate (Concepts), Develop (Developments), Refine (Refinements) – and clearly base this work on Established Design Practice by integrating three to five Designers styles.
    • On four A5 pages in your sketch book generate different concept drawings for your POSTER – THUMBNAILS for your first brief.
    • Incorporate specific and particular design qualities from the POSTER DESIGNS of your Established Designer research.
    • Consider the elements your poster requires; What kind of poster is it? How big is it? What distance will it be viewed from? For how long? How much text is there? Does it need a phone number, website, address? Does it need quotes or tag lines? Consider these tips for poster design.

IMPORTANT: Your six concepts must be of different types specific to this brief. Consider your different logo concepts; Lettermark, Wordmark, etc. Your brief is now a POSTER – ask yourself what the main types of posters are? Billstickers, shopfront poster, bus-shelter, mall kiosk, digital ad? Where do you see posters? Are they all the same size and shape? Do some research of the main types. TIP; it's easier than you think – Behance is a good source, but Pinterest may be even better. Have a look at Phantom

    5B – Brief Developments ––- Time Allowance: 8 lessons

Develop the Concepts for your design brief

When you have completed the six concepts, select and Develop specific aspects.
On four A5 pages, develop the most effective ideas for four of your designs.
You are exploring other options or directions at this stage by doing two things:
    1. Inform your designs from Established Practice by using specific ideas from your designer research and applying those clearly and directly to your designs. The best advice at the start is to follow the established design as closely as possible but with your own designs - ie the placement, size, angle, shapes will follow their structure. The colour palette and visuals should be all yours.
    2. Cross Polinate your designs by using elements from one Concept and combining it with elements from another Concept.
Your drawings for each Development will express the unique characteristics of a particular family member.

    5C – Brief Refinements ––- Time Allowance: 4 lessons

On two A5 pages, incorporate and refine the best elements from your concept and developments.
These designs will keep some elements while eliminating others, you may even add something new.
These will visually summarise, in a sophisticated manner, all that you have learned so far. Pay attention to detail and ensure that you have clearly carried your Designer Research into these final stages.

    5D – Brief Testing ––- Time Allowance: 5 lessons

As for tasks 2D and 4C.
